Description
Bonnington Cottage is a house dating from the mid-16th century and around 1700. It features a timber frame with exposed close studding and plaster infill, set on a base of brick and flint, with the left end wall constructed of red brick. The roof is plain tiled. The cottage consists of three framed bays and is two storeys high, resting on a plinth with a continuous jetty, except for the left end elevation which has a shaped gable. There are stacks to the left and a double stack to the centre right.
On the first floor, there are two four-light wooden casements and one two-light wooden casement to the right. The ground floor has a cross window, a two-light wooden casement, a three-light mullioned and transomed window, and another two-light wooden casement. The doors feature rib and stud designs with four-centred arched surrounds, located at the centre and to the right, with a blocked opening to the left.
To the left of the house, connecting it to Bonnington Farmhouse, is a courtyard enclosed by a 16-foot high red brick wall on a plinth. This wall features a central round-headed gateway between the two houses, about 5 feet high, with two gatepiers. The courtyard measures approximately 50 metres by 50 metres and is located to the rear left, south of Bonnington Cottage. The cottage was originally built as part of the manorial complex of the Boys family at Bonnington.
