Description
The walled gardens to the north of Goodnestone Park date from around 1700, with some repairs made in the 19th and 20th centuries. They are constructed of red brick and consist of three irregular courts, each featuring a continuous central path. Each court measures approximately 75 yards by 25 yards, although the southernmost court is larger, covering a total area of about 4 acres. The walls are generally around 8 feet high or more and include tall piers at the openings, which show signs of reconstruction from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The brick bonding varies, including irregular English bond, Garden Wall bond, and Flemish bond, with some sections featuring coping. The gardens have round arched doorways and two round arched gates near the house, which are rusticated with flint key blocks and side blocks. These gates may date from the mid-18th century or possibly the mid-17th century, potentially linked to the now-demolished Well House, designed in the style of Inigo Jones.
