Description
Beech Tree Cottage is a house that dates back to the 16th century but was refronted in the early 19th century. It features a timber frame that is rendered, topped with a plain tiled roof. The original design is likely a Wealden plan. The building stands two storeys tall on a plinth, with a cornice and parapet above a hipped roof that has large gablets and stacks on the right side and projecting at the end right.
The front has a regular arrangement of three two-storey recesses, each with four-centred arched heads and drip moulds. There are three-light mullioned windows on the left and right of each floor, and a two-light window in the centre. The ground floor features a door with six raised and fielded panels and a fanlight, with the two storeys separated by lozenge-shaped panels. At the rear, there are tile-hung wings.
Inside, the northern bay of the Wealden design has been replaced by an adjoining 19th-century building. The cottage has a crown post roof that shows signs of smoke blackening. The rear wings consist of separately framed 16th-century blocks.
