Description
This listing describes a group of three chest tombs and a headstone located about 5 to 10 metres south of the Church of St. James. The group includes two identical chest tombs, both with illegible inscriptions, with the more southerly tomb marking a death in 1717. These tombs feature plain panelled sides and ends, with central and corner uprights decorated with skulls and crossed mortuary tools, a moulded base, and a plain, incised top slab. The chest tombs are dedicated to Margaret Terry, who died in 1713, and Ralph Terry, who died in 1732.
The third chest tomb has a finely inscribed marble top slab, raised and fielded uprights, and enriched uprights with skulls and crossed mortuary tools. The headstone commemorates William Terry and dates to the late 18th century. It stands about 4 feet high and has a smaller stone attached. The headstone features a shouldered head with a moulded, dentillated frieze on scrolled sides, adorned with a winged cherub head and bifurcated floriated decoration.
