Description
The Church of St Mary is a Grade I listed building located in Stone, with origins dating from the 13th to the 19th century. The church was under the patronage of the Bishops of Rochester, who had a manor in the area. It is constructed from flint with stone dressings, with some areas patched in brick, and features a tiled roof. The layout includes a chancel with a north chapel, which now serves as the vestry, a nave with lean-to aisles, and a west tower. The aisles extend to the north and south of the tower, aligning flush with its west wall.
Inside, the church showcases a late 13th-century design, featuring a three-bay nave and a rib-vaulted chancel. The chancel wall has late 13th-century arcading, with spandrels that closely resemble those found in Westminster Abbey's Choir Chapel, suggesting that the same masons may have worked on both buildings around 1260. The north aisle retains remnants of late 13th-century wall paintings. The west tower is from the early 14th century, while the north chapel, built in the Perpendicular style, dates to around 1527. The church underwent restoration by G.E. Street around 1859-60, which included the roof. Notable interior features include a brass memorial for John Lumbarde, who died in 1408, a small tomb chest for Sir John Wiltshire, who died in 1527, and a small hanging monument in the west chapel for Robert Chapman, who died in 1574.
