Description

14 and 16 East Hill is a house, now functioning as a house with shops, dating from the 19th century with later alterations. The building is constructed of stock brick with red brick dressings and quoins, and it stands four storeys high with a two-bay elevation facing East Hill. Originally, as indicated by 19th-century maps, the entrance faced West, but this changed with the construction of No. 12 in the late 19th or early 20th century. No. 16 is three storeys tall with two bays.

No. 14 features bands at the second and third floor levels and a cornice. The ground floor has a shop window and doorway that retains its late 19th or early 20th-century casing. There is a three-light sash window on the first floor, and on the second floor, there is a sash window on the left with a blocked opening to the right. No. 16 has a 20th-century shop front on the ground floor, with a sash window on the left side on both the first and second floors; the first-floor sash is partly concealed, and there are narrow blocked openings to the right.

Inside, No. 14 has a 19th-century staircase leading from the first to the second floor, along with 19th-century ceiling cornices. Some 19th-century panelling has been uncovered on the landings, stairs, and in the rear room on the second floor. No. 16 contains 19th-century doors and a short stretch of straight baluster balustrade, as well as a 19th-century fireplace surround in the rear upper room. There is internal intercommunication between No. 14 and No. 16.
