Description
The Church of St Peter, located on School Lane in Bekesbourne, is a Grade I listed building. It is constructed of flint with stone dressings and features a chancel, nave, and a two-stage west tower topped with a crenellated parapet. The nave and tower date back to the 12th century, while the chancel was built in the 13th century. Notable architectural elements include a round-arched Norman doorway adorned with zigzag mouldings and crude heads carved on the responds. A transept, added in 1715, has a south wall faced with mathematical tiles. The church underwent significant restoration between 1881 and 1890. Inside, there are monuments such as that of Sir Henry Palmer, who passed away in 1611. The churchyard features 18th-century headstones with motifs of skulls, cherubs, hourglasses, and spades and mattocks, as well as chest tombs and oval bodystones.
