Description
The Old Palace is a late 18th-century house built by Robert Packham. It is two storeys and has attics, and is constructed of stuccoed walls. The roof is tiled, with a castellated parapet featuring a pediment centrally positioned to hide two dormers. The house has seven sash windows, although the glazing bars are now missing. A modern section has been built outwards along the front of the building. An L-shaped wing was added in the 19th century to the east end of the south front.
The site has an earlier history, as Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas Cranmer built a palace here in 1552, which was subsequently enlarged by Archbishop Matthew Parker in the 16th century. The palace was demolished during the Civil War. Only the Gatehouse survives, now a cottage adjoining The Old Palace to the south-east.
