Description

The remains of Canterbury Castle consist of a square Norman keep, dating from the Norman period. The keep was reduced in height in 1817 and now stands two stories above ground level. It is constructed of bands of flint and Caen stone blocks. Originally, there were four arched windows on each side. The interior features two cross walls and the remains of spiral staircases located in the east and south-west walls. Fragments of fireplaces are also visible, built with rubble arranged in a herringbone pattern. The keep measures 87 by 75 feet externally, with walls that are 9 feet thick. The site is protected as an ancient monument.
