Description

The four Smugglers Cottages, numbered 1 to 4, form a curved group with a rounded corner. Numbers 1 and 2 date from the 16th century and are timber-framed. The first floor of number 1 overhangs on curved brackets. The ground floor of number 1 is now roughcast, while number 2 has a brick facade with two late 18th or early 19th century curved shop windows retaining their glazing bars. The first floor of number 2 has four sliding sash windows. Numbers 3 and 4 are likely 17th century and are built of brick with a stringcourse. They feature modern casement windows. The cottages have tiled roofs and a brick chimneystack positioned between numbers 2 and 3. Numbers 1 and 2 contain inglenook fireplaces. A plaque identifying the cottages as a 'Historic Building of Kent' is present. The Smugglers Cottages are understood to form a group with Globe Cottage and Chestnut Cottage.
