Description
Greyfriars Monastery, located at 944 Stour Street, is a Grade I listed building. This structure is approached through the carriageway to No 6. It serves as the Custos's lodging and is uniquely built over the river Stour. At each end of the building, there are columns that rest on the riverbed, supporting two pointed arches that span across the river. These columns are believed to be made from stone salvaged from the part of the Cathedral that was burned in the 12th century. The building itself is constructed of flint, with some areas featuring patches of brick. On the southeast side, there are three buttresses. The site is also scheduled as an Ancient Monument.
