Description
The County Hotel is a late medieval timber-framed building located at 944 High Street, on the site of a 12th-century stone house belonging to Jacob the Jew. The exterior was completely refronted in the early 20th century and consists of three storeys. The ground floor is faced with stone, while the upper two floors feature applied timbering with plaster infill. There are three projecting bay windows on both storeys, each topped with gables. The roof is hipped and tiled. The ground floor includes two mullioned and transomed windows with leaded lights, along with a large round-headed arch. The side elevation facing Stour Street is tile hung. Inside, the building retains the frame of a three-storey jettied late medieval house, showcasing some original window openings, curved braces, and dragon beams. Additionally, remnants of the 12th-century house can be found in the cellar.
