Description
The Public Library and Museum at the Beaney Institute was built in 1897 by A H Campbell. It is a two-storey building with a basement, featuring a stone plinth, a brick ground floor, and a timber-framed first floor with mosaic infilling. The roof is tiled and has a large brick chimney. The building has three gables, each with elaborately carved bargeboards and a central finial topped with a weather vane. In the central gable, there are two stone putti holding the inscription "The Beaney Institute for the education of working men. Public Library and Museum." The design includes curved braces and quatrefoil ornaments, with fine curved brackets supporting the tiled gable.
On the first floor, there are two elaborate mullioned and transomed windows with leaded lights and a central oriel. The ground floor features two double segmental arched mullioned and transomed windows adorned with terracotta roundels depicting female figures representing Art and Science. The central doorcase has a pentice tiled roof with an intricately carved cornice and brackets, along with a curved stone balustrade and steps. The building also has a beautifully decorated rainwater head.
The Public Library and Museum at the Beaney Institute, along with Nos 20, 20A, 21, 24, and King's Bridge, form a group.
