Description

41 to 45 Palace Street is a historic building complex that serves as an outer gate to the Precinct, constructed by Archbishop Parker in the late 1550s and early 1560s. The front of the building was restored in the 20th century.

The structure consists of three storeys faced with flints and features a tiled roof. Numbers 41 to 43 have five windows with red brick surrounds and brick mullions. In the center of the ground floor, there is a painted stone archway. Number 44 is a two-storey building with three mullioned windows in brick surrounds. Number 45 has been plastered and is also two storeys, having been altered in the 18th century, and includes one sash window and an early 19th-century shopfront with pilasters.

Aside from the front, the gatehouse remains largely intact, particularly its brickwork, which includes a notable large key made of blue headers. Numbers 29 to 48 form a group with this building.
