PALACE STREET (East Side) Nos 41 to 45 (consec)

Nos 41 to 43 form an outer gate to the Precinct built by Archbishop Parker in the late 1550s and early 1560s. Nos. 44 and 45 are ancillary. Front restored in C20.

Three storeys faced with flints. Tiled roof. Nos 41-43 have five windows in red brick surrounds with brick mullions. In the centre of the ground floor is a painted stone archway. No 44 is of two storeys and has three mullioned windows in brick surrounds. No 45 is now plastered. Two storeys, altered in C18. One sash. Early C19 shopfront with pilasters.

Apart from the front, the gatehouse is very much intact especially its brickwork; see, for instance, a large key in blue headers.

Nos 29 to 48 (consec) form a group.
