Description
No. 16 Watling Street is one of the finest individual houses in Canterbury, dating from the early 18th century. It has an L-shaped design and is built of brick in English bond, featuring a stone parapet and quoins. The building has three rainwater heads and five sash windows with moulded architraves. On the ground floor, there are three round-headed sash windows and one three-light bay window. The doorcase is adorned with a flat cornice, two plain Tuscan columns, and two pilasters, topped with a rectangular fanlight that has glazing bars and a six-panel fielded door.
Inside, the house boasts an early 18th-century staircase, which includes two spiral balusters on each tread, scrolled tread ends, and a fluted newel post. The ground floor features an early 19th-century fireplace with fluted pilasters and a panel decorated with swags and sheafs of wheat. There are also some remnants of panelling on the first floor.
