Description

The Church of St Mary is a Grade I listed building located on Patrixbourne Road in Patrixbourne. It features a chancel, a nave with aisles, and a tower situated in the center of the south aisle, which serves as a porch at ground level. The tower is topped with a broached shingled spire. The church is constructed of knapped flint and includes a rare and notable east wheel window with cylindrical spokes. The chancel, nave, tower, and the south aisle to the west of the tower date from the late 12th century, while the spire is from the 13th century. Among its architectural highlights are an especially fine Norman south doorway and a good Norman priests' doorway. Significant restorations were carried out at the expense of the first Marchioness Conyngham, with the chancel restored in 1849 by architect Mr. Marshall of Canterbury, and the nave, tower, and aisle restored in 1857 by Sir George Gilbert Scott. The east end of the south aisle, known as the Bifrons Chapel, was rebuilt in the 15th century, and a north aisle was added in 1824. Some windows contain 16th and 17th century Swiss glass, which was donated to the church by Lady Conyngham in 1837. The churchyard also contains body stones.
