Description
The Refectory Hall and Kitchen to St John's Hospital dates from the 12th century and features elements from the 16th century. It was restored in the 19th century and is three storeys high, faced with flint and reused masonry. The roof consists of alternating bands of tiles and fishscale tiles, with end quoins. There is a septagonal turret that has blocked slit windows, topped with a tiled roof and a modern wrought iron weathervane. The gable end has stone mullion windows. A 12th-century arched door leads to the old kitchens, which contain an old kitchen range with an oven and iron spits. The Refectory above features a blocked 16th-century fireplace, original Refectory chairs and tables, and a fine late Medieval chest. The Chapel, Refectory Hall, Kitchen, a section of wall at the rear of the Chapel, and Nos 1 to 7 (consecutive) at St John's Hospital form a group.
