Description

Great Bower Farmhouse is a hall house that dates from the 15th and 16th centuries, with a 19th-century wing. It is constructed with a timber frame on a flint plinth, with the rear side exposed, while the entrance front is clad in red brick and tile hung, topped with a plain tile roof. The building has two storeys and an attic featuring a skylight, with a hip roof and gablets, and stacks located at the rear right and centre left. The first floor has four 19th-century sash windows, and there are three on the ground floor, along with a four-panelled door set in a sloping porch to the right. The 19th-century red brick wing is situated to the right of the main structure.

On the rear elevation, there are two projecting close-studded timber framed wings and a central panel-framed hall, all of which are exposed with plaster infill. Inside, there is a wooden newel staircase adorned with wall paintings of flowers and costumed figures, dated around 1560, along with fragments of painting found on beams and panelling. The fireplace, dating from around 1500, features roll-moulded jambs with a shield and heart-leaved tongues in the spandrels. Additionally, there is a partially exposed carved satyr-like figure on an otherwise bricked-over mantle in the hall. The roof is a crown post design, supported by tall (3-foot) octagonal moulded posts.
