Description
Pett Place is a historic house located on Pett Lane in Charing, built by the Sayer family in the early 18th century. The core of the house dates back to the 16th century and has been widened and gutted, although the original roof remains intact. There are also remnants of Norman cellars beneath the structure. The house is two storeys high, constructed of red brick with a tiled roof featuring a parapet. It has eleven sash windows with intact glazing bars. The window bays at each end may have been added later, while the main facade features shaped Dutch gables at both ends and in the center, each adorned with a wreath set within a square of moulding. The window bays below these gables are flanked by pilasters and contain wider windows than the rest of the front. A central porch with fluted pilasters and a projecting cornice leads to a doorway that has a rectangular fanlight and a door with six fielded panels. The east end window bay, which may also be an addition, includes a bay on each floor and another shaped gable above. Additionally, there is a long L-shaped 19th-century extension to the southwest.
