Description
The Moat House, formerly the rectory, is a large house located on Ashford Road in Charing, dating from the late 19th century to early 20th century. It has been divided into flats and is not considered to have special architectural interest. The east side of the building, comprising Nos 2 and 3, incorporates a 15th-century Wealden hall-house. This section is two storeys high and timber-framed, featuring close-studding and a moulded bressumer at No 2. Both Nos 2 and 3 have coved recesses and brackets, and the roof is hipped and tiled. No 3 includes a tie beam and crown post in the attics, while No 2 has a recess believed to be a priest hole and a passage thought to connect to Charing Parish Church. The moat surrounding the property still exists.
