Description

Wickens Manor is a 15th-century house built by the Brent family and embellished in the 16th century. It features a timber-framed and close-studded structure with plaster infilling. The first floor overhangs on a moulded bressumer and brackets, adorned with panels of ornamental timbering arranged in diamonds. The roof is tiled and hipped at the south end. The building has casement windows with wooden mullions and transoms, fitted with diamond-shaped leaded panes.

At the center, there is a projection that contains the porch on the ground floor, with timbers on each side of the doorway arranged diagonally. The first floor above also oversails and has a hipped roof. The ground floor includes a bay with a window featuring two tiers of five lights and a small window on each side. There are two similar windows on the first floor. The house has two storeys and a total of six windows. A brick chimney breast is located at the north end.

Beyond this is a 16th or 17th-century addition that has two windows, a lower elevation, and is faced with red brick on the ground floor and tile hung above. Inside, the hall features a fireplace dating from around 1530 and a fine carved overmantel from the early 17th century. The parlour contains a 16th-century fireplace with early 17th-century plaster decoration above it. It is said that John Brent entertained Henry VIII here during the king's journey to the siege of Boulogne in 1544.
