Description
The barn located to the south-east of Palace Farmhouse dates back to the 14th century and is part of the former courtyard of the manor house of the Archbishops of Canterbury. It was likely constructed by John Stratford, Archbishop from 1333 to 1348, who is believed to have favored Charing as his residence. The barn features two parallel ranges and an 'L' shaped projection to the south-west. It is built from stone rubble and flints, with long and short ashlar quoins. The roof is hipped and tiled, with a pentice on the south side. There are waggon entrances in the center of both the east and west fronts. The south-west projection includes a pointed stone archway, above which is a stone window with a single light and a 4-centred head.
