Description
This is a pair of houses, Lower Meadows and Meadows, dating to the 18th century with an extension built in the early 19th century. The original house, Lower Meadows, is constructed of ragstone, painted, with brick dressings and a plain tiled roof. It is two storeys high, with a brick dentil eaves cornice and a hipped roof to the left, incorporating a central stack. The front includes four glazing bar sashes on the first floor with half-sized upper leaves, and two tripartite glazing bar sashes with segmental heads on the ground floor. A blocked opening is on the left side, and a panelled door with a glazed top panel and segmental head is on the right. The rear elevation features four glazing bar sashes on the first floor, two on the ground floor and a glazed central door.
Meadows, the early 19th-century extension to the right, is two storeys high with a double-span roof, modillion eaves, and stacks at both ends. It features regular fenestration with three glazing bar sashes on the first floor, a tripartite glazing bar sash to the left on the ground floor, and a single glazing bar sash to the right. A central door features six panels within a moulded architrave, topped with a semi-circular fanlight, recessed within a pilastered surround. A tall, semi-circular headed stair window is present on the right return, and bay windows are featured at the rear, with tripartite glazing bar sashes.
The interior of Meadows includes a dog-leg staircase with a ramped rail and stick balusters. Extensive cellars run beneath both wings, including a blocked, vaulted passage leading to the adjacent church. The older wing is believed to have an earlier timber-framed core, which was re-clad by 1789. The property was formerly the Rectory.
