Description

Quested’s Cottage is a house dating from the 16th century, altered in 1778. It is timber framed and has external cladding of painted ragstone and tile hanging, with a plain tiled roof. The building is one storey high with an attic, featuring a hipped roof with gablets, a central stack cluster, and two hipped dormers. The front elevation has two wooden casement windows on the ground floor and a half-glazed door within a gabled porch, the door featuring painted glass. A catslide extension projects to the rear, incorporating a dormer, a stack, and a half-glazed door; this extension bears a brick date of 1778. Internally, the full timber frame is visible, including a tie-beam roof, and there are large inglenooks. The cottage is named after Cephas Quested, a notorious smuggler who lived here in the late 18th century.
