Description
The Old Bakery is a Grade II listed building located on Ashford Road in Orlestone. Originally constructed around 1500, it has served as a house, a public house, and a shop, with extensions made in the 20th century. The building features a timber-framed structure with exposed painted brick and plaster infill, topped by a plain tiled roof. It follows a Wealden hall house plan with four framed bays and stands two storeys high on a plinth. The building has jetties on both the left and right sides supported by dragon posts, with recessed central bays and eaves that extend across on arched braces. The roof is hipped, with a cluster of stacks on the right side.
On the first floor, there are wooden casements on the left and right, along with two central four-light frieze windows. The ground floor includes a multi-paned bay window on the left, two central glazing bar sash windows, and a sash window on the right. There are panelled doors to the centre left and left, as well as a half-glazed door and a picture window to the left in a 20th-century lean-to outshot. The building was formerly known as the Six Bells Inn and later served as a Post Office and Bakery.
