Description
The Wheel House and Donkey Wheel at Eggarton Manor is a structure dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. It features a timber frame that is clad in red brick, flint, and weatherboard, with parts rebuilt in red brick. The building has a plain tile roof and is one storey high, sitting on a plinth. The hipped roof includes a partial dogtooth cornice and gablets.
Inside, the donkey wheel is notable for its original shaft, which has wide chamfers and ogee stops, while the wheel spokes are designed with thin chamfers and run-out stops. The shaft and wheel house are structurally interdependent, indicating they were built at the same time. The roof is supported by arched braces, collars, clasped purlins, diminishing principals, and windbraces.
