Description
The Church of St Mary is a Grade I listed building located in Westwell. It features a chancel with north and south porches, a nave with aisles, a south porch, and a west tower with broached shingled stairs. The church dates from the 13th century, except for the south porch, which was added in the 16th century. The nave has four bays, and the columns of the south arcade lean outwards, supported by wooden braces or flying buttresses extending across the south aisle. The exterior south wall of the aisle is reinforced by a brick buttress added in 1885.
An unusual stone chancel arch consists of two very tall thin columns in the center, creating three narrow arches with trefoil heads. The chancel roof features a stone vault, and the choir stalls are arranged in a monastic style. The south aisle has a collar beam and crown post roof, along with a piscina and triple sedilia. The churchyard contains 17th-century headstones with primitive skulls incised, 13th-century headstones featuring cherub motifs, and oval bodystones.
