Description
Watersland is a house that dates back to the 16th century or earlier. It originally had two bays and was refronted and extended by one bay to the south in the 18th century, with further changes made in the 20th century. The building is timber-framed and clad in red brick in stretcher bond on the ground floor of the southern two bays, with tile hanging above and a weatherboarded half-hipped gable. The northernmost bay features red brick in Flemish bond, with weatherboarding above. The roof is tiled and has a central brick chimneystack. The house has two storeys and attics with irregular fenestration, including 20th-century casements on the south side and a 20th-century plank door in a 20th-century porch. The east front has one and two 19th-century casements and an 18th-century doorcase. An outshot to the west has two altered casements.
Inside, the ground floor north room features an open fireplace with a bressumer that has run-out stops and a three-plank door. The south room, which serves as an 18th-century parlour, has a smaller bressumer and exposed beams likely dating from the 18th century, along with an 18th-century winder staircase. The first floor reveals exposed framing with jowled posts and a curved tension brace, axial beams, and old floorboards, as well as a three-panelled door with old hinges. The southern part of the roof is from the 18th century, while the northern part was not accessible during the survey.
