Description
The Nelson Monument is a Grade II* listed structure built in 1807. It stands 120 feet high and is made of Portland stone ashlar on a granite base. This obelisk rests on a wide pedestal, with a tapered shaft that features recessed areas in the center of each side. The top of the obelisk is adorned with a segmental head that has two V-shaped indentations, and it includes recesses on the north and south faces, the latter housing a bust of Lord Nelson.
The pedestal also has recesses on its north and south faces, situated above a base. The top of the pedestal is distinguished by a groove below a fillet that turns up at each corner, forming acroteria. The south recess bears the inscription: "Consecrated to the Memory of Lord Viscount Nelson by the zealous attachment of those who fought at Trafalgar to perpetuate his triumph and their regret MDCCCV." The north recess contains the inscription: "The British Fleet consisted of Twenty Seven Ships of the Line of France and Spain Thirty Three Nineteen of which were taken or destroyed." The monument is recognized as an Ancient Monument.
