Description
This is a terrace of eight houses located on Eastgate Street, built in 1849. The houses are constructed of stuccoed brick, with a slate roof featuring gabled ends and deep eaves. Brick stacks are present, topped with cornices and square yellow clay pots.
The plan is typical of the period, with each house having an entrance passage to the right or left of the front room, and stairs located at the rear.
The east front of the terrace comprises 16 bays and is two storeys high, with a basement and attic. It features 16-pane sashes and round-headed doorways, positioned to the left or right of the ground floor windows. These doorways have semi-circular fanlights above panelled doors, and recessed round-headed panels above the doors are set within moulded architraves. A prominent egg-and-dart eaves cornice runs along the top, while moulded stringcourses are present at the first-floor sill level, acting as dripmoulds over the ground floor windows and doorways. The rear first floor windows are set in plain architraves, with some retaining their original casements and margin panes. The front gardens are small, enclosed by area railings on low stuccoed walls with panelled gate-piers.
The interior of number 25 retains a dog-leg staircase with stick balusters and turned newels, along with panelled doors and a round arch in the hall.
The terrace is considered a good example of an early 19th century classical stuccoed terrace, contributing significantly to the group value of the area.
