Description
The Westgate Hotel, built in 1833, is a prominent public house located on the north side of Romsey Road. This mid-19th century building features a rendered, curved frontage and stands three storeys tall with an attic. The first floor has two windows, while the second floor boasts six windows. The façade is accentuated by three pairs of giant Ionic pilasters, and the first floor sash windows are framed by paired pilaster surrounds with pedimented heads. Above, there is a dentil frieze leading to the attic storey. The ground floor presents a simple classical public house frontage, topped with a parapet, although the roof is not visible.
Adjacent to the hotel are Nos 2 to 10 (even) Romsey Road and Nos 3 and 4 Upper High Street, which are built from yellow brick and also feature three storeys. These buildings typically have one window each, mostly consisting of sashes with glazing bars, alongside some modern shopfronts and arched doorways. A modillion cornice and slate roof complete their appearance. The Westgate Hotel serves as the grand centerpiece of this block, which holds an important position in the area.
