Description

This monument commemorates the Great Plague of 1666. It was originally erected in 1759 and rebuilt in 1821 on the site of an earlier memorial. The monument takes the form of a Portland stone obelisk, set upon a square base with a rusticated finish. An inscription is present on the base, and is of very good quality. The memorial was erected by the Charitable Society of Natives, a society founded to assist those who survived the plague.
