Description

Knowle Hospital Chapel is a hospital chapel built in 1875 for Knowle Hospital. The building is made of red brick with blue brick bands and stone dressings. It features interlinked Roman tiles on the gabled roofs and a patterned brick eaves cornice, along with a brick and stone bellcote at the west end. The chapel has a five-bay aisleless nave, transepts, and a chancel. The western doorway is a brick moulded, pointed arch with a hoodmould, and above it are triple lancets that match the style of the door. Flanking the west end are three-bay porches with arcaded openings and gabled roofs. Full-height buttresses are positioned beside the nave windows, and the transepts are designed similarly to the west facade but on a smaller scale.

Inside, the chapel features red brickwork with blue brick bands and a white brick cross frieze beneath a hammerbeam roof. Stone columns support three-bay arcades that separate the nave from the transepts. The chancel arch is moulded in brick and has a painted riband inscribed with a religious text. The chancel itself is rendered to imitate fine masonry lines and is illuminated by triple lancets, with a canted panelled ceiling.
