Description
The Ironmaster's House is a two-phase building constructed in the late 18th century and early 19th century, with some renovations and minor extensions made in the 20th century. It features brick walls laid in both English and Flemish Garden Wall bonds, a plinth, and a first-floor band on the older section, along with pilasters on the front and cambered openings. The roof is tiled, gabled, and half-hipped. The house has two storeys and an attic, with a symmetrical east front elevation that includes three windows. The windows are casements, and there is a six-panelled door located beneath a gabled canopy supported by brackets. The house is adjacent to the remains of 18th-century ironworks, which are notable for the work of Henry Cort, who acquired the property around 1780. Cort is recognized for his patents from 1783 and 1784, which introduced technical innovations in the fining of cast iron to produce wrought iron.
