Description
The Crooked Billet is a lodge that was once an inn, dating from the 17th century with a late 19th-century addition. The building features part exposed timber-frame construction with brick infill, and the later addition is made of flint with brick dressings. It has an L-shaped plan, with the 17th-century section facing the road and the 19th-century wing extending at right angles, incorporating a bay that faces the road.
The structure is 1½ storeys high and has three bays, with the right bay being a projecting 19th-century roadside wing that includes 2 and 3-light casement windows with brick hood mouldings and a bargeboard on the gable. The central bay showcases exposed timber framing, with 2-light casement windows and a door located in a weatherboarded porch at the left end. The narrow left bay is a 19th-century addition featuring a small single-light casement with a moulded brick surround. A large 17th-century stack with three flues is positioned at the right end of the central bay, and there is also a stack on the side wall of the projecting 19th-century wing.
