Description
West Downs School Master's Lodge is a house built around 1905, designed by architect John Simpson in the Arts and Crafts style. The ground floor is constructed of red brick laid in stretcher bond, while the first floor is tile hung. It features a hipped tiled roof with tall channelled brick chimneystacks at both ends. The building has two storeys and attics, with four windows arranged in a slightly asymmetrical layout, forming an L-shape.
The left side of the lodge includes a projecting wing. A central pediment is adorned with a lunette window that has leaded lights. On the first floor, there are four triple leaded light windows. The ground floor boasts a large nine-light mullioned and transomed curved bay that spans the width of the pediment. To the left of this bay is a pointed arched door surround with a three-plank door. The projecting wing on the right side features a set-back doorcase supported by wooden piers. Notably, there are unusual tall iron brackets for the guttering. The rear elevation displays two gables. Although the interior has not been seen, it reportedly includes a large brick and lintel semi-circular fireplace with a timber base and period door furniture.
