Description
Edinburgh Lodge, located at 1, 17, 19, and 19A Hill Street in Edinburgh, was designed by George Angus between 1825 and 1828, with internal alterations made around 1900. This symmetrical, three-storey and attic, five-bay classical Masonic lodge also includes separate offices on the ground and first floors. It is constructed from polished cream sandstone ashlar and features a base course, cornice, and solid parapet.
At the center, there is a fluted Ionic columned doorpiece with two-leaf panelled oak doors and a boot scraper, flanked by two segmentally arched tripartite doorpieces that have Roman Doric pilasters and panelled doors. The inner bays on the first floor are adorned with tripartite windows. Above the central first-floor window, there is an incised Masonic pentagon, and to the right, a wrought-iron lamp bracket is mounted. The building has a later mansard roof that includes three pedimented dormers.
The rear elevation is four-storey and seven-bay, constructed from coursed rubble, and features an applied metal fire escape. The windows are timber sash and case, with 12 panes, and the first floor has 10-lying panes. The building has ashlar coped skews, stone stacks, and is covered with grey slates.
Inside, a central door leads directly into a two-stage timber stair with turned and blocked banisters leading to the mezzanine and upper floor. The lower stage features a simple musk enriched plaster ceiling, which was copied around 1990 from a damaged original, along with a fine carved neo-classical chimneypiece. The upper floor contains a large top-lit Lodge Room, with flanking doors providing access to separate offices. No. 19A includes an internal stair, while No. 17 is a single storey, previously used as Gentlemen and Ladies Baths.
