Description

ROMSEY ROAD SU 42 NE 12/43 West Downs School Hall and Chapel II School hall and chapel above. c 1905, architect John Simpson in Arts and Crafts style. Built of red brick with steeply pitched tiled roof, 2 storeys and attics, 5 windows. Octagonal bell turret to west end, the base tile hung, the top wooden with tiled roof and elaborate metal weathervane. 3 hipped dormers with leaded lights to each side. Windows are separated by brick buttresses,lst floor windows are small cambered casements with leaded lights. Ground floor windows are larger 2 tier triple casements. Projecting west end bay also with cambered casement. East end has circular stained glass windows and extensions with 3 cambered 12 pane sashes. Interior of chapel has exposed roof timbers. Carved reredos. Good quality window catches. Staircase designed in concrete with terrazzo finish with balusters alternately thick and thin. Hall has wooden panelling and large stone fireplace with brick infill.
