Description
West Downs School Hall and Chapel is a school hall and chapel built around 1905, designed by architect John Simpson in the Arts and Crafts style. The building is constructed of red brick and features a steeply pitched tiled roof, with two storeys and attics, and five windows. At the west end, there is an octagonal bell turret, with a tile-hung base and a wooden top that has a tiled roof and an elaborate metal weathervane. Each side of the building has three hipped dormers with leaded lights. The windows are separated by brick buttresses; the first-floor windows are small cambered casements with leaded lights, while the ground-floor windows are larger two-tier triple casements. The projecting west end bay also has a cambered casement. The east end features circular stained glass windows and extensions with three cambered twelve-pane sashes. Inside the chapel, there are exposed roof timbers and a carved reredos, along with good quality window catches. The staircase is designed in concrete with a terrazzo finish and has balusters that are alternately thick and thin. The hall includes wooden panelling and a large stone fireplace with brick infill.
