Description

The Church of St John is a parish church built in 1875 by Colson, with a tower added in 1887, designed in the Early English style. The church features walls made of squared limestone rubble with Bath stone dressings, a plinth, and stepped buttresses, which are diagonal at the corners. It has large east and west windows with geometrical tracery, aisle windows consisting of grouped lancets (two or three), and a rose window above triple lancets in the south transept. The clearstory has a circular frame with pointed cinquefoil lights, all topped by a steep tile roof.

The tower consists of four stages, with a plinth, an entrance doorway on the south side, buttresses with gabled steps, a crenellated parapet, and crocketted corner pinnacles. The nave is arranged in five bays with aisles, and the tower is located at the west bay of the south aisle, alongside a chancel with north and south transepts and a north porch.

Inside, the walls are constructed of red brickwork with yellow and some black banding. The soffits of the pointed arches are decorated with a dog-tooth pattern. The columns are arranged diagonally and feature stone shafts with base and band mouldings, topped with elaborately carved leaf caps. The church fittings, including a stone pulpit, an octagonal font located in the easternmost bay of the south aisle, and a light wood chancel screen, are all from the same period.
