Description

The Church of St Swithun upon Kingsgate, built in 1833, features a 14th-century gateway, which is one of the two remaining city gates. The church, constructed in the 16th century, is built over this gateway, which is designated as an Ancient Monument. The structure is made of stone and flint, with an open timber roof inside. There are two pedestrian entrances from the 18th century, framed by brick arches, and the building has a battlemented parapet. The church above has small windows dating from around the 15th century and a plain timber roof. It was restored and re-furnished in 1971. The Kingsgate is part of a group with Nos 1 to 3, which are consecutive properties.
