Description
This is a late 18th-century house and rear service block, now a bank (at the front) and offices. The front elevation is stuccoed, with a painted brick plinth incorporating low, cambered openings. It features stone cills and a parapet coping with an elaborate texture of interlaced bevelled quoins and blocks, cambered arches with triple keys to the centres and sides, and moulded coping to the higher parapet. There are panels above the windows and a moulded cornice, with architrave moulding acting as a first-floor band. A tile roof is hidden by the parapet. The symmetrical east front has 2, 3, and 2 storeys and 2, 3, and 2 windows, with sash windows in reveals. A Doric doorcase with an open pediment, three-quarter columns, swag ornament, panelled reveals, and a six-panelled door faces the street.
The rear of the building includes stables and service buildings abutting Brook Street. These have painted brick walls in a Flemish Garden Wall bond, a plinth, and a tile roof with wrought-iron brackets to the eaves. Features include a five-light 18th-century leaded casement, an arched doorway beneath a hayloft door, a low access door, and a carriage doorway. Inside, a fine oak staircase with dado panelling is present. A kitchen contains a medieval carved stone bracket, assumed to be a fragment of a bishop's head from the nearby ruined Bishop's palace.
