Description
Wonston Cottage is a farmhouse that has been converted into a cottage, dating from the 16th century and late 18th century. The building features a timber frame encased in brick, with some rubble flint and plaster, topped by a thatched roof. It is 1½ storeys high and consists of three bays, with a lean-to structure at the right end.
The central bay has a baffle entry, which is highlighted by a mid-19th century tiled gabled porch that features a detached curly bargeboard and a side door. There are three wide sash windows with glazing bars, set beneath cambered arches formed by a soldier course below a row of blue headers. Above these windows, three eyebrow dormers contain 2-light casements. The building has an offset and toothed cornice, a half-hipped roof with wide eaves, and gable end stacks, with a larger stack located to the left of the center.
Inside, the room to the left of the door features heavy, closely spaced chamfered and stopped joists. At the rear, there is a lean-to dairy that includes an 18-light window. Historically, this cottage was the center of the basket and lobster pot industry.
