Description
Pollen's Almshouses, built in 1686 with later 19th-century restoration, is a regular row of cottages featuring one storey and an attic. The building has six windows and three paired doorways, topped with a tile roof that includes a catslide at the rear. There are three large old chimneys and six dormers with sills at eaves level, complemented by brick-faced gables. The exterior is constructed of coursed flint walling in panels, accented with red brick dressings. Quoins frame all openings and corners, extending vertically above a horizontal band at the first-floor level, and there is a high brick plinth. The end gables display similar banding with a central vertical feature. The windows have modern casements, and the doors are plain boarded. Above the central doorways, a stone panel is inscribed with "Almshouses erected by John Pollen Esq 1686."
