Description
The engine house, located 50 meters northwest of Broadlands House beside a watercourse, dates from the late 17th century and was rebuilt in the early 19th century. It is constructed of two types of brick and is partially buried under a mound. Inside, there is a vault with a brick passage leading to a series of three vaulted chambers. The first two chambers are each 1 meter long, while the third chamber is 2 meters long. The first chamber features a by-pass leet with a sluice, the second chamber houses a waterwheel with cast iron spokes, an axle, and centers that are about 2 meters in diameter, and the third chamber contains a three-ram pump that supplied water to the house, brewhouse, and dairy.
