Description
The Byre Block, located about 20 metres north-west of Quarley Down Farm House, is a byre and stable block built in 1894 by Crickmay and Sons for H C Stephens M.P. The structure features red brickwork, mostly rendered on the exterior, and has a plain clay tiled roof with stone slate base courses and raised ridge courses for ventilation. It is a single-storey building arranged in a U-shape with projecting end gables, oriented on an east-west axis and consisting of 8 bays. The end bays have a tall plinth with weatherboard cladding and inset doors, while the upper parts of the overhung gables are tile-hung. The central bays open above a high plinth level and have pairs of sliding doors under raked roof sections on the end elevations. Inside, there is a channelled concrete floor and simple roof trusses with angled struts and iron rod king-post trusses. Originally, the central portion of the south roof slope featured continuous patent glazing. Signed and dated drawings of this building, as well as a more elaborate design, can be found in the Wiltshire Record Office.
