Description
The Church of St Peter is a parish church located in Hurstbourne Tarrant. It dates from the late 12th century, with additions from the 13th and 15th centuries, and underwent restoration in 1853. The church features a transitional nave and aisles with four bays, an Early English chancel that was virtually rebuilt in the 19th century, and a timber-framed tower situated at the west end of the nave. There is a south porch added in 1908. The roof is low-pitched and covered with lead, while the porch is tiled and the tower is shingled with a broach spire. The walls are constructed of flint and rubble with stone dressings, and include lancets, coupled lancets, two geometrical windows, one Perpendicular window, and two 14th-century clear-story windows, along with some buttresses.
Inside, the pointed arcade is supported by cylindrical columns. The font dates from the 13th century and has a 17th-century wooden cover. The main frame of the tower incorporates parts of the screen, and there are prescription boards above the chancel arch, along with a Royal Coat of Arms of George III attached to the tower frame. The church also contains a Jacobean pulpit, two old communion rails, an old south door, and several wall monuments. A particularly notable feature is a set of medieval wall paintings in the north aisle, with the most significant depicting 'The three living and three dead'.
