Description

Paynes Hay Farmhouse is an early 18th-century farmhouse that was extended in the 19th and 20th centuries. It has a brick facade with a peddledashed finish, and an old plain tiled roof. The main structure is two storeys and an attic, built over a cellar, and originally comprised a five-bay by two-bay layout. There are later wings to the rear and a single-storey, two-bay wing to the right. The front elevation features a 19th-century four-panel door with a top light, set within an 18th-century doorcase with a two-pane rectangular fanlight under a flat hood supported by moulded brackets. To either side of the door are early 19th-century sixteen-pane sash windows. A blind opening is located in the left-hand bay. The first floor has five 18th-century twelve-pane flush-frame sashes. Three two-light, hip-roofed dormers are set into the roof. The roof itself is hipped. A large stack is located on the rear wall, centered on each side of the hipped staircase wing, which has been incorporated into later additions. The interior has been altered, but retains some original 18th-century features.
