Description
Letterbox Cottage, including the attached post-box to the north, is a cottage and post-box dating from the 17th century, with alterations from the 18th and 20th centuries. The post-box dates from around 1857 to 1859. The building features a timber frame with rendered infill and is encased in brick, topped with an old plain tile roof. It is a two-storey cottage with an outshot on both sides, consisting of one bay facing the road. The road-facing end has an exposed frame with a four-light casement window above a two-light casement window. To the right side of the road end, there is a stack beyond the two-light casement and a stable-type door. The roof is half-hipped. This cottage, along with the Smithy, is part of the landscape features of the now-demolished E Tytherley Manor. The attached post-box to the north is set in a small rendered brick pier with tile capping. It is a rare example of a post-box first introduced in 1857, which was replaced in 1859 by a version with a pitched top due to issues with leaking; both types feature flaps and hoods over the aperture.
