Description
Pennymarsh is a former pair of cottages that have been combined into one dwelling. The building dates from the 15th century, with additions from the 17th century and late 18th century. It features a timber frame, brickwork, and a thatched roof. The central section of the structure is a medieval cruck-framed hall, which had a first floor added in the late 16th or early 17th century, along with a large chimney. There are 18th-century extensions at both ends and some re-cladding of the central part from the same period.
The east elevation has one storey and an attic, with three windows above five. The overall thatched roof is half-hipped at the ends, and the eaves are raised above two upper windows. The north side of the frame is exposed, featuring brick infill, while the west side has brick walls in Flemish bond with blue headers and cambered openings. The windows are casements, and there is a boarded door with a thatched hood supported by posts. The south gable, which faces the roadway, has brickwork above the eaves level and four horizontal flint panels below.
Inside, the cruck framework is visible, along with stop-chamfered beams and joists. There is a bread oven built into the chimney and two staircases.
