Description
The Officers' Mess at Lille Barracks, built around 1890, features a long symmetrical south elevation with a raised central section and lesser projecting ends. The rear includes several projecting wings arranged in a near-symmetrical fashion, creating distinct west and east elevations. The building is two storeys high and has a window arrangement of 2.2:2.1.2:2.2.2.2.2:2.1.2:2.2. The roof is slate and hipped, with a small central gable. The walls are made of red brick, featuring cambered open cill-level bands at both the ground and first floors, as well as a plinth. A central open porch is flanked by a three-light bay on each side. The east facade has a projecting two-storey entrance unit topped with a gable. The building contains sash windows. It is one of three surviving mess buildings that exemplify a typical design.
